A Night With Dr. James Makokis: Two-Spirit Resilience and Decolonizing Medicine

Provost Lecture Series on Reconciliation

Dr. James Makokis is a two-spirit physician from Saddle Lake Cree Nation, and winner of season 7 of The Amazing Race Canada. He practices family medicine and transgender care in Kehewin Cree Nation, where he incorporates Cree medicine, language and ceremony into his work as part of a healthy life. Dr. Makokis is an associate clinical professor at University of Alberta and is a recipient of the National Aboriginal Achievement award.

Dr. Makokis married his husband Anthony Johnson during the 2017 Vancouver International Marathon, where they said "I do, at KM 32." Together they competed as “Team Ahkameyimok” in Season 7 of The Amazing Race Canada, and won, while bringing attention to several important messages including MMIW, two spirit and transgender issues, “Water Is Life,” Treaty issues and Indigenous languages.

Dr. Makokis and his husband are currently spearheading a fundraising campaign to build a healing lodge in Kehewin Cree Nation, where Dr. Makokis works.
